Position Description

To support the Machining Engineering direction, strategy and customer satisfaction with respect to quality, cost, delivery while meeting financial performance objectives.  Directs the machining engineering team to recommend and implement improvements to processes, methods, controls and product design.  Oversees and provides guidance for customer communication for customer complaints and corrective actions.  Fosters talent development, mentoring and training as needed.  Supports manufacturing strategy through capital planning and supporting new process development for new product launch.  Ensure safe work practices are designed into all processes. Interacts with all levels of the organization, as a team, to produce and be accountable for desired results.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Champion engineering related continuous improvement strategies which support the overall business strategy including metrics of quality, cost, delivery, customer service, employee morale, safety, manufacturing technology, profitability, and business growth.
  • Foster an environment of teamwork and cooperation to ensure the successful achievement of the facility’s and BorgWarner business strategy and financial objectives.
  • Proficient in CNC code writing (ie: M-code, G-code)
  • Proficient in cutting tools, styles and how it relates to CNC work holding, feeds and speeds
  • Proficient in GD&T and how to best hold and locate on parts to ensure dimensional control and stability
  • Ability to work with engineering and suppliers to develop the casting / forging datums & tolerancing and how it relates to the final dimensions and tolerancing
  • Assist in establishing and meeting Departmental and the plants capital budget.
  • Provide focus and feedback methodology to ensure the departments critical action items are managed and driven to closure.
  • Supervise direction and priority of Quality-Manufacturing Engineering activities.
  • Stay abreast of quality control and continuous improvement technology.  Best practices to be established and implemented.
  • Stay abreast of manufacturing process technologies.  Best practices to be established and implemented.
  • Provide direction for improvement opportunities including direct report development.
  • Utilize Workday to define/update performance and development objectives in a timely fashion and provide feedback to employees on an ongoing basis.
  • Work with organization to identify most value-added, cost effective training opportunities to address employees’ training needs.
  • Serve as a coach to employees.
  • Responsible for leading engineering projects as they relate to product and process development activities and providing technical expertise for the organization
  • Develop project plans, schedules and budgets.
  • Provide guidance and leadership over the purchase and qualification machinery as needed for manufacturing purposes.
  • Oversee the Design and build production equipment, fixtures and tooling as required.
  • Ensure rigorous qualification of the manufacturing processes through robust process validation and verifications
  • Support and provide leadership over performing root cause analysis, develop and implement corrective and preventive actions
  • Coordinate investigation and corrective action for customer and internal issues
  • Train and mentor the team to use the 8D corrective and preventative action system
  • Mentor team and or support customer calls to assist Quality concerns.
  • Ensure the department maintains revised manufacturing process drawings and documentation.
  • Provide process training to manufacturing/operations personnel for new processes.
  • Maintain compliance with company policies and procedures.
  • Work with Advanced Mfg group and Global Mfg council to benchmark new processes, best practices and lessons learned.  Drive into processes locally as deemed fit.
  • Participates in or leads new program / project design reviews with Advanced engineering group
  • Support Global Manufacturing Council with resources.
  • Identify, support and lead actions for implementing cost improvements/lean projects.
  • Partner with Supervisors to improve machining/molding/assembly-related costs – labor, scrap & design ideas.
  • Develop, evaluate and improve manufacturing methods by analyzing and planning work force utilization, space requirements and workflow.
  • Works with equipment vendors to develop & implement equipment / tooling / coolant improvements
  • Develop, drives implementation and documents effective cost reductions on time.
  • Interacts effectively with all levels of the organization, frequently participating on or leading cross functional teams.
  • Works within and helps to develop  procedures for  IATF Quality systems
  • Willingness to travel (about 15% of time).
  • Maintains project status reports working closely with program management
  • Ensure issues are appropriately prioritized within group
  • Assures adherence to current health, safety, and environmental policies. 
  • Identifies and closes safety issues (suggestions, investigation findings) and their corrective actions.  
  • Maintain a floor presence to show support for the production team and foster positive working relationships.
  • Train and mentor team to generate and maintain PFMEA (Process Failure Mode and Effects Analysis), control plan, tool layouts and other process documentation.
  • Estimate production times, staffing requirements, and related costs to provide information for strategic decisions.
  • Understand future manufacturing requirements. Analyze the need for capital equipment and have the capability to justify the investment(s).
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • 8+ years of experience in automotive industry (Tier1, Supplier, OE) is required
  • Understanding GD&T
  • Understanding CNC tooling, work holding and programming
  • Understanding of lean principles with demonstrated application is required
  • Understanding of the APQP process with demonstrated application is required
  • Proficiency with Microsoft office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook) is required.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience managing large capital equipment projects within deadlines is required
  • Demonstrated experience with new project costing, involvement in financial analysis is required
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are required.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                      

Required Education

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in an Engineering discipline.

Preferred Elements

  • Continuous Improvement
  • Statistical Methods (Six Sigma Black Belt preferred)
  • FMEA, APQP, PPAP, MSA, Process Flow, Corrective Action Process, etc.
  • Problem Solving Methodologies (5-Why, 8D, etc.)
  • TS 16949 (transition to IATF with industry)
  • Working knowledge of SAP system.
