BorgWarner PowerDrive Systems is currently looking for a “dynamic, results driven” individual to join as Senior Staff Functional Safety Engineer supporting the Systems Engineering Competency at our Propulsion Technical Center (PTC) in Auburn Hills, MI.

Key Accountabilities

  • Lead the engineering team through the application of ISO 26262 at all levels (system, sub-system, component)
  • Act as the main engineering customer interface for safety reviews and discussions
  • Develop the Technical Safety Concept based on identified Product Safety Requirements and Functional Safety Concept
  • Ensure traceability of safety requirements and design throughout the entire lifecycle.
  • Perform Functional Safety Analysis including HARA, ASIL identification, DFMEA, FMEDA, FTA, etc.
  • Design and implement the safety architecture according to the technical safety concept, including ASIL decomposition.
  • Ensure product development is coherent with the defined safety requirements
  • Coach engineering teams to understand system safety concepts and implement these concepts in hardware and software designs
  • Provide required engineering input for the Safety Plan, Safety Concept and Safety Case.
  • Ensure the proper completion of verification reviews and confirmation measures
  • Lead the appropriate safety analysis to ensure all product development safety activities are performed according to relevant safety standards.
  • Support the creation of the system safety test specification by supporting the validation engineer in defining safety test cases using the safety requirements and safety measures.
  • Educate engineering personnel on safety processes and strategies.
  • Provide coaching and training to peers on safety methodologies to increase safety awareness.
  • Analyze and improve product safety by researching relevant markets, communicating with engineering, customers and end users, and by monitoring product usage and incidents.
  • Support customer inquiries on project safety topics by supporting RFQs and feasibility analysis for pre-MS0 work.


  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Computer Science
  • Master’s degree in Systems, Electrical, Mechanical, or Software Engineering is preferred
  • Expert knowledge in ISO 26262 or related safety standard
  • FSCAE/AFSP Preferred
  • 10+ years’ experience in automotive system development experience
  • 5+ years’ experience in functional safety
  • Experience in applying functional safety to automotive drivetrain or propulsion systems is preferred
  • Organized and structured work-style and attention to detail are required
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English language required
  • Strong PC knowledge and experience are required
  • Willingness to travel up to 10% is required
