Component Release Engineer - Seal and Fasteners

 A Component Release Engineer (CRE) is responsible for the design and release of mechanical components that are used in conjunction with each other within BorgWarner Power Drive Systems products.  This CRE position will include responsibility for rubber components used for sealing and fasteners including bolts, nuts, studs, plugs, and snap rings.  This position requires the engineer to work as part of a matrixed engineering organization to design and release products.  The engineer must be capable of working closely with other CRE's and Product Engineers to design and validate products to customer requirements.   The Component Release Engineer must work with manufacturing disciplines, Purchasing and suppliers to release parts into production. 


  • Have a good working knowledge of static and dynamic seals, including functions, failure modes, manufacturing processes and validation requirements.
  • Have a good working knowledge of bolted joint design, analysis and validation
  • Have an understanding of Automotive Driveline or Powertrain components
  • Good analytical skills for designing and analyzing components and sub-systems
  • Thorough knowledge of component drawing requirements, including tolerances, GD&T, and their use in stack calculations
  • Create process standards such as: design criteria checklists, design calculation standards, design review material; maintain and present these documents as necessary
  • Perform engineering analysis and calculations on components and present rationale to program team
  • Issue CAE requests and provide direction as needed for analysis of systems and components.
  • Create and maintain DFMEAs for components
  • Create design work orders and provide direction to CAD as necessary to develop the product design. Approve and release engineering drawings.
  • Create ADVP&R to validate components and write lab work orders to direct technicians to conduct testing on components
  • Analyze components for wear and durability
  • Write test reports relating to the outcome of tests performed
  • Create technical criteria for supplier selection and participate in the selection process  
  • Provide consistent technical conduit to the Purchasing group including Supplier Development Engineers
  • Work with suppliers and internal manufacturing to assure feasibility of designed components
  • Promote component re-use through knowledge of the global component family
  • Review / Approve internal and external change requests
  • Provide technical support for component issues arising in validation or warranty
  • Provide cost reduction ideas for their respective component families
  • Provide opportunities for new technology approaches in the component families


  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • Minimum of 5 years of related engineering work experience required
  • Experience in powertrain, driveline and/or 4WD systems is preferred
  • Experience and/or training in the development and maintenance of DFMEAs is required
  • Experience and/or training in Root Cause Analysis is preferred
  • Experience and/or training in APQP is preferred
  • Experience and/or training in DFM/DFA is preferred
  • Manufacturing and assembly process knowledge is preferred
  • Self-directed/self-motivated
  • Excellent drive for results with the ability to coordinate projects from start to completion
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills required
