Powdered Metal Tool Design Engineer

This position is located at BorgWarner’s PowerDrive Systems manufacturing facility located in Livonia, MI. This position provides an excellent opportunity to apply talent and proven skills that drive tangible product and process improvements through the facility.


  • Review New or Marked-Up Component Product Drawings for PM / Manufacturing Suitability
  • Manage Implementation of Tool Details & Engineering Drawings / Engineering Library
  • Calculate & create tool tolerances to achieve finished part dimensions
  • Calculate the stresses on tools – punches / adaptors / other tools. Balance the deflections accordingly
  • Create & Manage Press Tooling Layouts with Proper Change Management Practices
  • Manage contracted tool vendor sources for detail drawings and engineering updates, review their inspection reports for print conformance
  • Maintain Customer Paid Tooling Reimbursement Process


  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering; preferably Mechanical Engineering or 5+  years’ experience in P/M tool design and process engineering
  • Training in P/M related subjects preferred (metallurgical analyses, properties of tool steel, etc.)
  • Knowledge of Powdered Metal processes; understanding of details related to compaction and re-strike presses or stamping.
  • Excellent proficiency in the following: Pro-E Creo, Auto CAD, Team Center, MS Office
  • Understanding of PM Tool Steels
  • Ability to comprehend product flow from raw material to finished goods.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills to successfully interact with multiple levels of internal and external customers.
  • Understand plant wide safety requirements and BW policies and procedures.

This position will adhere to Global Star Safety Program, including safety rules, practices and training as outlined in the BorgWarner PTC Safety Policy Manual, which includes the use of equipment, protective devices, or clothing that the employer requires. This individual will work in manners that stress the importance of preventing accidents and illnesses. He/she must take every precaution reasonable in the given circumstance for the protection of themselves and coworkers. In addition, he/she is responsible for reporting all injuries and/or possible dangerous situations, incidents, or occurrences to the immediate supervisor.
