BorgWarner Power Drive Systems is currently looking for “dynamic, results driven” individual to join as a Senior Test Technology Engineer specializing in test equipment procurement and development at our Propulsion Technical Center (PTC) in Auburn Hills, Michigan.

In this role, and under direct supervision of the Operations Manager, the Senior Test Technology Engineer will be primarily responsible to lead the procurement and continuous improvements of test equipment for the PTC prototype lab. They will handle all aspects from concept to commission of equipment, and beyond by providing on-going technical support.

Key Accountabilities:

The Test Technology Engineer will be responsible for:

  • Identify problems and equipment needs based on test demands and overall test strategy.
  • Work with the team to establish requirements for new equipment, improvements to existing equipment, and acceptance criteria.
  • Provide concepts, budget and timing estimates for new equipment and improvements.
  • Work with purchasing to develop RFQs and identify equipment providers for the new equipment and improvements.
  • Provide technical expertise during new equipment and improvement quote evaluation and supplier selection.
  • Develop Appropriation Requests to justify and receive approval to procure new equipment and improvements.
  • Provide new equipment and improvement project management, which includes managing suppliers, internal and external project timelines, open issue lists, shipment and installation, and run-off/acceptance, and providing professional updates to the team on the progress of projects.
  • Be the technical expert on the operation and design of test equipment, author instructions for test equipment, and provide support and training to the team.
  • Coordinate and Support calibration of test equipment.
  • Provide troubleshooting, including data analysis, and root cause identification on test equipment and lead implementation of solutions.
  • Be the technical liaison to others to provide requested technical information about test equipment.
  • Assist the team to create and perform test procedures, ensure DUTs operate properly, and diagnose and resolve any issues related to the test equipment and the interface to the DUTs.
  • Establish hardware and software standards for new equipment, local at the PTC and globally with the other BorgWarner Technical Centers.
  • Establish, document, implement, and share equipment best practices.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering: Mechanical, Manufacturing, Industrial, Mechatronics, and/or Electrical Engineering preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years Test Engineering experience made up of multi-year experience with industrial controls and automation design, preferably dealing with test equipment
  • Broad knowledge of drivetrain laboratory test equipment; suppliers, specifications, operating requirements, and costs
  • Automotive electrical system experience preferred
  • Ability to read, and preferably create, comprehensive electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic schematics using specified software (ex. AutoCAD)
  • Extensive experience in troubleshooting and problem solving relating to industrial controls and test equipment, in an efficient and effective manner.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills to effectively communicate with all levels of the Organization
  • With minimal supervision, demonstrate strong problem-solving skills, multi-tasking abilities, priority acknowledgement and setting, attention to detail, leadership attributes and self-starter attitude
  • Willingness to routinely work in a hands-on manner
  • Must be highly aware of, and willing to be certified in and adhere to, medium voltage and high voltage safety standards and procedures
  • Work well in a collaborative team environment
  • Willingness/ability for travel up to 15% both domestically and internationally
  • Ability to work proactively with internal and external customers
  • Analytical, technical, and statistical skills
  • Familiarity with MSA, SPC, FMEA, DOE, 8-D, GD&T, PPAP, APQP
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite of software
  • Knowledgeable and experienced in implementing Lean standards and practices
  • Additional preferred qualifications:
    • Knowledge of PLCs, HMIs, VB.net, LabVIEW DAQmx, VISA, XNET, VeriStand, Inertia, TestStand, DIAdem, LabVIEW FPGA, and LabVIEW Real-Time Module
    • High level knowledge of NI hardware and their advantages and limitations
    • Experience with testing of hybrid traction machines on dynamometers
    • Strong electrical controls background – USB/Serial devices, Analog and Digital IO, Hall Effect, Rotary Encoders, Thermocouples, LVDT, CTs, Current Shunt, GFM
    • Extensive knowledge of transducers and signal conditioning types for speed, torque, pressure, flow, temperature, voltage, current, vibration, noise, and strain
    • Experience using oscilloscopes, multimeters, power analyzers, data loggers, and other instrumentation
    • Experience with commercial inverters (VFDs), Battery Simulators, and Regenerative DC bus.
    • Inverter control methods (6-step, space vector modulation, sinusoidal PWM, etc.)
    • Motor control methods (IPM IdIq vector model, induction, switched reluctance, brushless DC)
    • Motor position and speed sensor technologies: Resolver, Encoder, Sin/Cos
    • Experience with environmental testers: thermal, dust, fog, and spray
    • Harmonic analysis
    • Understanding of vehicle communications software and functions that interface with inverter and electric motor systems: CAN, CAN open, FlexRay
    • Unico control hardware experience
    • Good understanding of rotating electrics: automotive starters, alternators, or hybrid traction machines
    • TeamCenter PLM experience
    • Familiarity with NVH principals, measurements, and analysis
