Senior Functional Safety Engineer is responsible for supporting BorgWarner High Voltage Power Electronics Products to achieve functional safety compliance w.r.t ISO26262. The role will be based in Nürnberg. You will work with all engineering disciplines and the customer safety engineering team to mitigate the risk of safety hazard of the vehicle as specified by OEM and achievement of functional safety goal within the boundaries of Borg Warner item definition.

You will work on latest state of the art 800V SiC and 400V Si / SiC Inverters for Battery Electric Vehicles and Plug-in Hybrid Vehicles for the eMobility market.

Job Location: Nürnberg


  • Maintain communication and develop a good working relationship with the customer; establish and maintain the communication link between the engineering department at the customer and the BorgWarner project teams

  • Specification of technical system safety requirements allocated to hardware

  • Specification of system safety design (hardware-software interface specification) to support hardware implementation

  • Specification of functional and non-functional hardware safety requirements (including safety requirement to production)

  • Review and approval of hardware schematics (electrical and mechanical drawings/schematics) together with the Functional Safety Analyst and the Electrical Engineering Team

  • Review and approval of hardware verification and validation reports

  • Support hardware FMEA and classification of safety characteristics

  • Develop system integration and system qualification test cases

  • Support debug / test defect investigation of system safety technical safety concept on HIL, MotorSym, Dyne/PHIL testing

  • Provide technical on-site support to the customer to review safety requirements

  • Test trip participation: locally in Germany or abroad. Coordinate results and customer feedback proactively with the development team

  • Document and report development work

  • Communication/presentation of issues / fixes from BorgWarner to the customer

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (Minimum Qualifications)

Electrical Engineering degree; 5 plus years of experience in Automotive Engineering

  • Experience in eMobility High Voltage Products like High Voltage Inverters

  • Experience with ECUs

  • Experience testing in vehicle, on test benches or at HiLs

  • Knowledge on hardware simulation model

  • 3+ years’ experience as functional safety engineer

  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills

  • Experience on Medini Analysis Tool is an advantage

  • Experience on FEMDA, PMHF, FMEA, FTA, and Dependent Failure Analysis methodology

  • Well organized and structured

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills

  • Fluent in German and English
