BorgWarner PowerDrive Systems is currently looking for “dynamic, results driven” individual to join as an Electrification Controls Engineer at our Indiana Technical Center (ITC) in Noblesville, Indiana.

In this role, the Electrification Controls Engineer will perform inverter and/or motor controls functions to electrification controls programs.   

Job Duties:

  • Lead the development of motor controls and inverter derating functions for inverter in electric and hybrid vehicle applications.

  • Support product development work products such as software requirements documentation in order to develop & document software requirements

  • Establish traceability between product verification and requirements

  • Work with controls and inverter systems team to integrate and support motor controls and derating algorithms in application.

  • Support dynamometer, HIL, PHiL and motor simulation bench testing for algorithm development and verification.

  • Perform simulation of inverter control and derating algorithm and inverter systems models in order to develop and adapt various derating algorithms.

  • Analyze inverter power loss through test and modeling.

  • Integrate electric machine parameterization and controls.

  • Communicate project technical status internally and externally

  • Some travel and a flexible work schedule on occasion


  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, specializing in power electronics, machine controls, or controls focus.

  • 3+ years’ experience in industry with BS Engineering or master’s degree in engineering concentrating in controls function with internships or 1 year experience; However, preference will be given to those with 5+ years’ experience

  • Desire to be part of deeply-skilled team and to engineer automotive power electronics for the next generation of electrified vehicles, while working with some of the world’s top automakers

  • Knowledge of power electronics systems and inverter operation

  • Knowledge and familiarity with high voltage power device technology such as IGBT and SiC

  • Knowledge of machines or motors and related control concepts for electric and hybrid electric vehicle drive systems, including Field Oriented Vector Control  and Space Vector Modulation techniques

  • Knowledge of electric and hybrid electric vehicle drive systems and applications, including inverter loss modeling, optimal inverter operation for torque output based on current and voltage limitations, and inverter modulation techniques

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

Preferred qualifications:

  • Automotive Engineering experience

  • System simulation and modeling tools (e.g. Matlab/Simulink), on-board diagnostics, and design approaches to meet functional safety requirements, and structured problem-solving techniques

  • Knowledge of automotive microprocessors

  • Familiarity with electric/hybrid vehicles
