BorgWarner PowerDrive Systems is currently looking for a Mechanical Engineer for our eHW Innovation team at Technical Center in Bascharage, Luxembourg.

In this role, the Mechanical Engineer will participate in several hardware-related projects ranging from complete packaging design of power converters to detailed analysis  (Thermal, Vibration etc.) and studies of electronics package concepts of subsystems, such as custom semiconductor modules or assemblies, magnetic structures, interconnection systems for high current etc. Owing to the  rapid development of Electric mobility solutions tremendous potential exists for innovation in high power electronics  systems  packaged safely and cost-effectively for use in electric vehicles. You will be part of a multi-cultural, multi-disciplined product development team working on projects involving multiple locations.


  • Concept, design and execute Power Electronics Hardware mechanical designs related to On-Board Chargers, DC-DC Converters and Inverters.

  • Design responsibilities will range from study and conceptual work on advanced thermal and packaging solutions as well as being able to take a complete power electronics electrical concept involving semiconductors, capacitors , magnetics and high voltage and high current interconnections to mechanical product concepts.

  • use analytical CAE tools for thermal analysis, vibration, fluid flow, etc.

  • Translate customer specifications for package concepts.

  • Work in close cooperation with the electrical design and manufacturing teams to design the best mechanical solutions to meet or exceed customer requirements


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (Minimum Qualifications)

  • Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Mechanical Technology or related field such as mechatronics with special interest in electronics packaging.

  • Minimum three years in design in Power Electronics industry (Power supplies, UPS’s, Industrial drives etc.) . Experience developing Power Electronics for EV’s and HEV’s a plus.

  • Strong mechanical hardware design and analytical skills with passion for creating innovative compact and thermally efficient power conversion systems.

  • Familiarity with electronics packaging and thermal management and trade-offs especially in the design of switching supplies and converters in the 5 to 30kW range.

  • Effective presentation and documentation skills with ability to engage constructively with the customer.

  • Familiarity with automotive industry performance norms and safety standards and high voltage design rules.

  • Previous experience in automotive component reliability, failure analysis and structured problem solving techniques will be an asset.

  • Solid ME CAD skills – preferably  experience with Siemens Unigraphics NX.

  • Experience with FEA tools including Ansys, etc.

  • Active engagement in a multi-disciplinary , diverse design team spread across the US, Asia and Europe

  • Though design effort will involve EE expertise for the electronics hardware side, a good working background in this area from the electrical side will be highly beneficial towards accomplishing timely and successful designs.

  • Fluency in English is required
