This position is in BorgWarner’s Corporate Advanced Engineering group. This is a dynamic team environment that combines the best aspects of both research and production organizations. The Advanced Engineering department leads and supports advanced projects in all areas of advanced propulsion while fostering an environment of teamwork and innovation that positively impacts the auto industry. 

The Controls and Software Engineer is charged with designing, creating, coding, testing and developing the control algorithms for next generation propulsion systems, with a focus on hybrid and electric vehicles.  The work will include system modelling, simulation, algorithm creation, software development, testing and validation of control strategies for drivetrain systems. This position may include customer interaction, both with internal and external customers. 


  • Develop algorithms, software, and computer models for evaluation of the control strategies for new propulsion concepts.
  • Responsible for creating, building, developing, calibrating, and testing control strategies.
    • Create and build algorithm models and simulations using computer design tools such as Matlab/Simulink.
    • Create embedded software from the algorithm models for use in electronic control units.
    • Specify electronics for reading sensors and inputs and controlling actuators and outputs.
    • Create test plans and perform validation of the algorithms and software.
    • Perform calibration of the control systems on dynamometer and in vehicle.
    • Develops and integrates CAN communication networks.
    • Supports realization of control algorithms into real-time software
    • Analyze data and report results.
  • Responsible for writing technical reports and communicating results.  

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (Minimum Qualifications)

  • BS degree in Electrical or Mechanical engineering required.
  • Master’s or Phd degree in control system engineering is preferred.
  • 1-3 years of control algorithm and embedded software development a plus.   
  • Knowledge of automotive drivetrain mechanical and/or electrical systems is required.
  • Experience with electrified vehicles is a plus.
