BorgWarner Expands R&D with New Facility at its Technical Center in Spain

Vigo, Spain, November 17, 2016 – BorgWarner, a global leader in clean and efficient technology solutions for combustion, hybrid and electric vehicles, is expanding the testing and lab capabilities at its Spain Technical Center (STC) in Vigo with the inauguration of a new research and development (R&D) building on November 16, 2016. Featuring 1,630 square meters of office space, testing areas and laboratories, it can accomodate 85 employees and offers new testing equipment to develop leading technologies. Built for energy efficiency and sustainability, BorgWarner’s new R&D facility offers an efficient and comfortable work environment for its employees.

“The STC team has been a valuable part of BorgWarner's worldwide development network. This expansion will further support their capabilities to design advanced exhaust gas cooling and recirculation systems for combustion and hybrid vehicles and add to the 49 patents they have already generated for innovative emissions solutions,” said Brady Ericson, President and General Manager, BorgWarner Emissions Systems. “By expanding the center’s development capabilities, we also enhance our ability to help customers produce cleaner and more efficient vehicles, while strengthening our position as a product leader in emissions systems."

BorgWarner’s new R&D facility consumes 80 percent less energy and uses 30 percent less water compared with average buildings in Spain. Partly reusing the structure of an existing building, the new offices and labs were built with environmentally friendly materials and nearly 90 percent of the construction waste was recycled. In addition to the Smart Building Management System which optimizes the use of energy, solar panels and waste heat from test benches heat water, highly efficient filters improve air quality, thermal and acoustic insulation saves energy and reduces noise, and large windows maximize natural light for a comfortable work environment. Electric vehicle charging stations  support employees’ use of more sustainable transportation.
