Controls & Software Development Engineer

BorgWarner Emissions Systems is currently looking for a dynamic, results driven individual to join as a Controls & Software Development Engineer for the Emissions Thermal and Turbo Systems Business Unit, at our Powertrain Technical Center (PTC) facility which is located in Auburn Hills, Michigan U.S.A.

This engineering position will support the research and development engineering (R&D) team and work with the application engineering (AE) team in the areas of system integration and calibration, electronic testing, for customer applications used in vehicle emissions systems.  Such products include electronic actuators, electronic EGR valves, intake and exhaust throttle valves, exhaust heat recovery systems, and other related technologies. 


  • Support of R&D products from development to production; including specifications, software/calibration, electronics interface, supplier interaction, electronics testing, and general support.
  • Understand requirements to generate a software design implementation
  • Understand requirements to generate a calibration implementation.
  • Understand requirements to generate controls implementations, and system models.
  • System integration of the electronics sub systems with validation.
  • Guide implementation of new designs and components into the applications products.
  • Work to solve software, electronic and system issues during product design and testing.
  • Plans, schedules, and coordinates detailed phases of the engineering work from initiation of design through production along with follow-up and support.
  • Performs work that involves conventional engineering practice. Controls a variety of complex features such as conflicting design requirements, unsuitability of standard materials, and difficult coordination requirements.
  • Work in coordination with suppliers and customers efficiently and effectively.
  • Self starter and leads projects with minimal oversight


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (Minimum Qualifications)

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (Mechatronics, Electrical)
  • 7+ years of experience in electronic product design and development
  • Experience in automotive engine components and systems *preferred
  • Product development and launch experience  *preferred
  • Experience with and knowledge of control theory  *preferred
  • Detailed understanding of design processes
  • Good presentation skills and experience  *preferred
  • Experience and knowledge of EMC
  • Compute skills in Microsoft Office products *preferred
  • Proficiency in usage of Simulink for software and system modeling *preferred
  • Proficiency in embedded C code software design and quality *preferred
  • Proficiency in software validation *preferred
  • Proficiency in PC software design in multiple code languages
  • Proficiency in system/mechatronic development *preferred
  • Proficiency in calibration methods and tools *preferred
  • Experience in rapid prototyping modeling tools  *preferred
  • Proficiency with CAN and support tools *preferred
  • Proficiency with electronic actuators *preferred
  • Proficiency in electronics hardware *preferred
  • Proficiency in statistical methods for data analysis
  • Experience and knowledge for IATF16949 quality procedures and documentation requirements
  • Travel to support customer and product development *preferred
