BorgWarner PowerDrive Systems is currently looking for “dynamic, results driven” individual to join as a Embedded Functional Safety Software Engineer at our Customer Technology Center Michigan (CTCM) in Auburn Hills, Michigan.

Position Summary:

In this role, and under direct supervision of the Software Group Manger, the Embedded Functional Safety Software Engineer will be responsible for developing functional safety work products according to the ISO 26262 series of standards for electrified powertrain control applications from concept to production. Implement functional safety concept development for Software involving hardware and system development. Work with cross-functional teams including controls engineering group, functional safety manager, and suppliers to develop and implement safety plans throughout the development lifecycle.

Job Duties:

  • Performs impact analysis and develops safety work products to meet electrified powertrain functional safety compliance
  •  Coordinates with the Functional Safety Manager (FSM) and System Engineers to be the main customer interface for safety topics and regular safety status reporting as needed or applicable
  •  Provides status of safety activities to the FSM/Sys as requested
  • work closely with system safety architecture and controls group to design safety mechanisms
  • Provides planning directions to V&V team for verification and validation of the safety architecture
  •  Develops the safety Software, case report and safety analysis reports
  • Interfaces with the supplier(s) for safety topics and regular safety status exchange following the development interface agreement (DIA)
  • Interfaces with external contractors (e.g., consultancy / offshore services) in cases of outsourcing some of deliverables
  • Participates ins ECU design reviews with internal cross-functional engineering group, suppliers, and customers
  • Provides input to system DFMEAs and supports the development of electronics DFMEAs as needed
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams on functional safety topics and aid in fostering a work environment that keeps safety in mind.
  • Work with Functional Safety Manager(s) to ensure ISO26262 compliance on all work products


  • B.S. or Master of Science Degree in Software Electrical Engineer, Computer Engineering, Embedded Software Engineer or similar fields
  • 2+ years' experience with vehicle embedded systems and functions preferably on high voltage power electronics products
  • Experience with software, modeling/Autocoding and simulation tools such as Matlab / Simulink
  • Deep knowledge of automotive systems and software development processes using the V-Model for both design and verification/validation activities
  • Understanding of ISO 26262 and experience developing major work products for a functional safety program
  • Experience with Activity Management Software (i.e. Jira) and Requirements Management Software (i.e. Polarion)
  • Experience with power-electronics and high voltage traction inverters
  • Understanding of AUTOSAR Architecture(s)
  • Knowledge of AGILE development methodologies
  • Willingness to travel 5-10% as required to support customer and internal needs

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with embedded platforms, microcontrollers, A/D converters and digital logic
  • Experience with controlling automotive BLDC motors, solenoids and sensors
  • Certified in ISO 26262, exposure to software quality processes (ASPICE, CMMI, IATF16949)

This position will adhere to the Global Star Safety Program, including safety rules, practices and training as outlined in the BorgWarner Safety Policy Manual.  This individual will work in a manner that stresses the importance of preventing accidents and illnesses.  He/she must take every precaution reasonable in the given circumstance for the protection of themselves and co-workers.  In addition, he/she is responsible for reporting all injuries and/or possible dangerous situations, incidents, or occurrences to their immediate supervisor.
