BorgWarner is currently looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer based at our PowerDriveSystem (PDS) offices in Oxford.

This is an exciting opportunity for an engineer to join a small, fast moving team working on cutting edge vehicle electrification technology. This engineer will be involved in the mechanical design aspects of power electronics products. The work will include concept design, prototype design, through to detailing of products for low, medium and high-volume production. Solutions will be required for automotive and/or motorsport future technology applications that could be on or off vehicle. They must have the ability to analyse problems from first principles and come up with innovative solutions with the ability to test and report effectiveness. They must work well as part of a team but also be capable of self-management to a specification and produce work meeting the company quality requirements meeting what can be tight deadlines.

Job role:

  • Clean-sheet mechanical design and development of enclosures, heat exchangers and related electro-mechanical components for motorsport and similar low volume, high performance applications
  • 3D CAD modelling and 2D Engineering drawings of components and assemblies
  • Mechanical/Thermal/Fluid analysis of conceptual designs
  • Build and test of prototype hardware
  • Working autonomously and as part of a small, fast moving multi-disciplined team to achieve project objectives
  • Support technicians when required
  • Work to company quality standards

Must have experience and skills in ALL of these areas below:

  • Creation of high-quality 3D models and assemblies using Solidworks
  • Production of high quality 2D engineering drawings, for both manufacture and assembly, to BS8888
  • Design, development and delivery of prototype/low volume components and related tooling
  • Packaging of electronic components or assemblies in mechanical housings
  • Appropriate selection of materials and manufacturing processes and design for manufacture principles
  • Use of hand calculations and appropriate analysis software (ANSYS, MATLAB, STAR-CCM+, FLUENT etc) to validate designs
  • Hands-on assembly of prototype hardware

Desirable experience and skills:

  • Experience with rotating electric machines
  • Heat exchanger sizing and design
  • Good understanding and experience of working with a wide variety of materials and production processes
  • Ability to understand technical requirements and their influence on design
  • BOM creation
  • Liaison with suppliers/manufacturers
  • Experience of working in a fast paced, delivery focussed environment

Qualifications & experience required:

  • BSc (Hons) in Mechanical, Motorsport or Automotive engineering or equivalent. 2.1 or higher grade
  • Proven professional experience as a Mechanical Engineer
