BorgWarner PowerDrive Systems is currently looking for “dynamic, results driven” individuals to join as a Motor Controls Engineer in our power electronics organization at our Noblesville Technical Center (NTC) in Noblesville, Indiana.

In this role, the Motor Controls Engineer will be primarily responsible for the conceptual and detailed design, analysis, modelling/simulation, documentation, and integration, test and tuning of electric machine controls algorithms on BorgWarner power electronics products.  Will ensure that the controls of BorgWarner’s power electronics products are properly specified, designed and tested to meet customer performance requirements.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Work with the BorgWarner systems engineers and program team to ensure the proper decomposition, allocation and documentation of controls requirements into hardware and software
  • Develop optimized electric machine controls algorithms and techniques utilizing balanced requirements to meet schedule, technical and cost constraints
  • Perform the desk top computer modeling, simulation and optimization of electric machine controls
  • Execute the laboratory Hardware-in-the Loop and dynamometer test/characterization, tuning and verification of machine controls requirements
  • Support BorgWarner product development team with technical design analysis, trade-off studies, design reviews and customer presentations
  • Focal point for machine controls design technical discussions with cross-competency team, management and customers using highly effective communication and facilitation skills and techniques
  • Work with Systems Engineering and Application Engineering to investigate vehicle systems controls issues
  • Determines best techniques/procedure and applies for analysis, design, or experimental procedures
  • Documents and shares best-practices
  • Mentors the less experienced; role model for BW Beliefs
  • Willingness/ability to travel 10% both domestically and internationally

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering required
  • Advanced degree preferred
  • Controls concentration
    • Internal Permanent Magnet (IPM) and/or AC induction experience required
    • Experience using Lundell Machines preferred
  • Minimum 8+ years of experience required in some combination of the following areas:
    • Experience developing and implementing electric machine controls for Induction, Interior Permanent Magnet, Wound Field Synchronous, and Surface Permanent Magnet electric machines
    • Sensorless  motor control
    • MATLAB and Simulink modeling and simulation of poly-phase electric machine controls and modulation techniques
  • In-depth understanding of vector control, various PWM schemes and flux observers
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Automotive Experience strongly preferred
  • Experienced in classic control theory and modern control theory
  • Experience in Electronics Engineering in a manufacturing industry
  • Proven track record of commercializing complex electric machines controls in electronics products
  • Ability to coach and mentor team members
  • Highly developed professional relationships with OE customers and leading university & research organizations working in power electronics and motor controls
  • Has a broad knowledge base of engineering theories (in several different specialties) and applies those theories to a variety of complex tasks and situations
  • Strong mathematical background, analytical skills and statistical skills
  • Works under limited supervision
  • Ability to solve problems efficiently and effectively
