BorgWarner PowerDrive Systems is currently looking for Motor Controls Technical Specialist with a dynamic and results driven approach to taking innovative advanced motor control algorithms in electric motor controls  to production in our power electronics organization at our Propulsion Technical Centre (PTC) in Auburn Hills, Michigan.

In this role, the Motor Controls Technical Specialist will be primarily responsible for the conceptual and detailed design with analysis and implementation of advanced electric machine algorithms. As a Technical specialist he/she will also be responsible to work with a global team to mentor controls, calibration and firmware engineers in Electric Propulsion Controls(EPC) team within the power electronics competency of BorgWarner Power Drive Systems(PDS).

Key Accountabilities:

  • Work with the BorgWarner systems engineers and program team to ensure the proper decomposition, allocation and documentation of controls requirements into hardware and software
  • Develop novel and sometimes industry first electric machine controls algorithms and techniques
  • Internalize customer requirements for Global Electric Propulsion Controls in PDS and balance them to meet schedule, technical and cost constraints for a given system.
  • Help and mentor controls engineers to execute the laboratory dynamometer test/characterization, tuning and verification of machine controls requirements.
  • Support BorgWarner product development team with technical design analysis, trade-off studies, design reviews and customer presentations.
  • Focal point for machine controls design technical discussions with cross-competency team, management and customers using highly effective communication and facilitation skills and techniques
  • Work with Systems Engineering and Application Engineering to investigate vehicle systems controls issues
  • Determines best techniques/procedure and applies for analysis, design, or experimental procedures
  • Documents and shares best-practices
  • Mentors the less experienced; role model for BW Beliefs
  • Willingness/ability to travel 25% both domestically and internationally


  • Master’s Degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering required
  • PhD degree preferred
  • Controls concentration
    • Internal Permanent Magnet (IPM) and/or AC induction experience required
    • In depth understanding of inverter operating in control of AC machine
  • Minimum 8+ years of experience required in some combination of the following areas:
    • Experience developing and implementing electric machine controls for Induction, Interior Permanent Magnet, Wound Field Synchronous, and Surface Permanent Magnet electric machines
    • Sensorless motor control
    • MATLAB and Simulink modeling and simulation of poly-phase electric machine controls and modulation techniques
  • In-depth understanding of vector control, various PWM schemes and flux observers
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Automotive Experience strongly preferred
  • Experienced in classic control theory and modern control theory
  • Experience in Electronics Engineering in a manufacturing industry
  • Proven track record of commercializing complex electric machines controls in electronics products
  • Ability to coach and mentor team members
  • Highly developed professional relationships with OE customers and leading university & research organizations working in power electronics and motor controls
  • Has a broad knowledge base of engineering theories (in several different specialties) and applies those theories to a variety of complex tasks and situations
  • Strong mathematical background, analytical skills and statistical skills
  • Works under limited supervision
  • Ability to solve problems efficiently and effectively
