Auburn Hills, Michigan, May 27, 2025 – After crossing the finish line at the 2025 Indianapolis 500, Alex Palou was honored for winning this year’s race and awarded the Borg-Warner Trophy® and Victory Lane wreath by BorgWarner President and CEO, Joseph Fadool at Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS). This marks Palou’s first Indy 500 win and the first time a Spaniard has claimed victory in the legendary race. Palou, driving for Chip Ganassi Racing, started the race in the sixth position, averaged a speed of 168.883 mph, and led only the final 14 out of 200 total laps.
To commemorate his 2025 victory, Palou’s face will be added for the first time onto the Borg-Warner Trophy alongside 111 previous winners. Palou, three-time IndyCar Series season champion, extended his tremendous 2025 IndyCar series points lead, winning 5 out of the first 6 races, and is looking to earn a fourth title later this season.
This marked the sixth Indy 500 team win for Chip Ganassi Racing, with previous winners Juan Pablo Montoya (2000), Scott Dixon (2008), Dario Franchitti (2010, 2012), and Marcus Ericsson (2022).
“BorgWarner is always excited to be a part of the greatest spectacle in racing, and we’re proud to recognize and celebrate drivers from across the globe,” said Fadool. “We’re honored to present Alex with this trophy, highlighting his excellent performance at this year’s Indianapolis 500.”
After the start of the race was delayed because of rain, nearly 300,000 spectators watched Palou cross the finish line ahead of American David Malukas of A.J. Foyt Racing. Palou gained the lead on the 187th lap and held the top spot until the end of the race. Defending back-to-back winner Josef Newgarden, driving for Team Penske, was looking to win again and be the only driver to win three consecutive Indy 500s but did not finish the race after technical difficulties in the 135th lap.
The historic Borg-Warner Trophy has been presented to each Indy 500 winner for 89 years. It was first debuted by Eddie Rickenbacker, a previous owner of IMS, in 1936. Commissioned the year prior, the trophy was designed by Robert J. Hill and Spaulding-Gorham, Inc. of Chicago and continues to serve as a symbol of success in the racing world today.
Beyond presenting the trophy, BorgWarner has a long-established relationship with the Indy 500 race. BorgWarner’s Engineered for Racing (EFR™) turbochargers have powered every NTT INDYCAR SERIES® vehicle since 2012. The EFR turbochargers enable the vehicles to reach speeds well over 200 mph throughout the race, providing unmatched levels of power and speed.
