Senior Systems Inverter Engineer – High Voltage Inverters (Nürnberg or Luxembourg)

The Systems Inverter Engineer is responsible for the conceptual and detailed design, analysis, modelling/simulation, documentation, and integration, test and tuning of electric machine controls algorithms on BorgWarner power electronics products. He or she ensures that the controls of BorgWarner’s power electronics products are properly specified, designed and tested to meet customer performance requirements

You will be part of a multi-cultural, multi-disciplined product development team, working on latest state of the art 800V SiC and 400V Si / SiC Inverters for Battery Electric Vehicles and Plug-in Hybrid Vehicles for the eMobility mass market.

Job Location: Nürnberg or Luxembourg


  • Interface with a German customer to evaluate and specify power electronic inverters

  • Work with the BorgWarner systems engineers and program team to ensure the proper decomposition, allocation and documentation of controls requirements into hardware and software

  • Develop optimized electric machine controls algorithms and techniques utilizing balanced requirements to meet schedule, technical and cost constraints

  • Perform the desk top computer modeling, simulation and optimization of electric machine controls

  • Execute the laboratory Hardware-in-the Loop and dynamometer test/characterization, tuning and verification of machine controls requirements

  • Support BorgWarner product development team with technical design analysis, trade-off studies, design reviews and customer presentations

  • Focal point for machine controls design technical discussions with cross-competency team, management and customers using highly effective communication and facilitation skills and techniques

  • Determines best techniques/procedure and applies for analysis, design, or experimental procedures

  • Documents and shares best-practices

  • Mentors the less experienced; role model for BW Beliefs


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (Minimum Qualifications)

  • Masters or PhD Engineering degree in Electrical/Electronic/Mechatronics

  • 5 plus years of experience in Automotive Electronic or e-Mobility  (Hardware).

  • 5 plus years High Voltage Inverter Controls experience for Internal Permanent Magnet (IPM) and/or AC induction

  • Experienced in classic control theory and modern control theory

  • In-depth understanding of vector control, various PWM schemes and flux observers

  • Experience MATLAB and Simulink modeling and simulation of poly-phase electric machine controls and modulation techniques

  • Big picture thinker with an eye for details

  • Fluency in English is required. German would be an advantage
