BorgWarner’s PowerDrive Systems business unit is currently looking for a dynamic, results driven individual to join as a Validation Engineering Supervisor, in the Test, Validation and Reliability group at our Auburn Hills, MI Propulsion Technical Center (PTC).

POSITION SUMMARY

In this role, and under direct supervision of the Validation Chief Engineer (TVR), the Validation Engineering Supervisor will be a “hands on” working supervisor of the Validation Engineering team to bring technical leadership, coordination, and prioritization of the team resources and technical development work. The Validation Engineering Supervisor will ensure electrification products are properly tested and validated by the team by maximizing testing efforts to statistically correlate failure modes in the real world. The Validation Engineering Supervisor will be responsible for the development, execution, and data analysis of validation plans to test mechanical components and integrated electric propulsion systems. The system level validation includes rotating electric machines, power electronics, software, and driveline systems. This person will have a strong mechanical understanding of all product interfaces for EV propulsion systems and insight into system FMEAs, including the applicable test procedures required for validating the product. They will define equipment software and hardware requirements and collaborate with the Test Technology team throughout the development of the equipment, including setting up, troubleshooting, and testing the products to confirm the validation activities meet the application intent. This person will work closely with cross-functional teams and various customers to understand the product and ensure it meets/exceeds customer performance and durability requirements.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Supervisor Role
    • Coordinate and prioritize validation engineering work among the Validation Engineering team.
    • Plan / Budget resources
    • Review and approve engineering test results and reports from the team
    • Provide technical leadership to Validation Engineers on their work

  • Drive best practices and continuous improvement in processes and tools
  • Conduct employee performance reviews and facilitate/support employee career development
  • Interface with internal engineering groups for workload and resource scheduling
  • Provide budgeting forecasts for people and testing, internal and external, to support DVP&Rs
  • Validation Engineering Role
    • Review customer test specifications, lead discussions with product development team, and create validation cost estimates.
    • Author and receive approval of DVP&R. (Validation Test Plans)
    • Identify required equipment resources to support product testing. Collaborate with local and global test labs to ensure best cost/performance/timing options for test execution.
    • Develop software and hardware requirements for new technology required to test future products.
    • Integrate, troubleshoot, and commission electric propulsion systems including control systems, inverters, rotating electric machines, and automotive driveline components to support validation testing.
    • Define test priority and coordinate both internal and external testing activities.
    • Create test profiles based on product and application requirements.
    • Definite and implement testing standards to meet reliability targets with statistical correlation to failure mode avoidance in the intended product environment.
    • Ensure all validation plan requirements are defined and documented; follow execution of plan to closure.
    • Analyze test data to ensure testing was executed properly, meets acceptance criteria, and learnings are communicated to the product engineering team including documentation of non-compliance triggering 8Ds for product development teams.
    • Author validation report.
    • Support product engineering on root cause analysis of product failures.
    • Develop test strategies to align with product roadmap and ensure test technologies are aligned with both present and future product line needs

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • B.S. Mechanical/Electrical/Systems Engineering required, M.S. Engineering preferred
  • 5+years of engineering experience in Electric Vehicle Propulsion systems required
  • Test & validation experience preferred
  • Previous supervision experience is preferred
  • Experience in integrating, troubleshooting, and commissioning inverters, controls, or rotating electric machines required
  • Understanding of vehicle communications protocols that interface with inverter and electric motor systems: CAN, CAN open, CAN FD, FlexRay
  • Statistical analysis and strong analytical experience preferred
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English required
  • Ability to routinely work in a hands-on manner required
  • Ability to work flexible hours to support multi-shift operation if necessary
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally up to 10%
  • Ability to work under limited supervision (self driven / self starter)
  • Strong teamwork and collaboration skills required
  • Must be highly aware and adhere to high voltage safety standards and procedures
